Remains of Crash Victim From \'44 Will Be Buried

A coffin with the partial remains of a United States Army corporal whose plane crashed into the mountains of Tibet in 1944 will finally be returned home today, officials said yesterday.

Cpl. Joseph Petrella had been listed as missing in action for nearly half a century until bones of the five men who died in the crash were discovered in a melting glacier in 1993.

It took several years for the Chinese Government to report the discovery and for the bones to be identified at a military forensics laboratory in Hawaii, said John Scofield, a spokesman for United States Representative Frank A. LoBiondo, Republican of Vineland. Only a leg bone could be positively identified as Corporal Petrella\'s, he said.

Corporal Petrella, originally of Dennis Township, will be buried on Saturday with military honors in Cape May County Veterans Cemetery in Upper Township.
