Yangkai Airbase In Modern Times

Top image (above) is the the village immediately adjacent to the former Yangkai airbase during our visit in February on 2016.  The local people refer to the base by the name of the village, Longyuan (龙院), and not by Yangkai (or Yangjie in standard Mandarin; 羊街), which is a larger village some distance away.

This village was heavily influenced by the war-time arrival of the Americans, going very quickly from a desperately poor and unknown village, to a locally pivotal community in a very short time. This village shows up in many American veteran photo albums, as there was not much entertainment for Americans on the base, and exploring the local villages was a pastime for some.  Mr. Dou (on the left; 86 years) and Mr. Shu (middle; 90 years) recounted many stories from their time laboring to build the airbase as youth, and in working on the base during the war. Mr. He (right) of the local county government translates from the local dialect into standard Mandarin to faciliate our comprehension.
