Crossing By Ferry Near Lingling

In this fascinating photo--a virtual Norman Rockwell still-life of wartime life in China--Chinese troops, American troops, and Chinese civilians cross the Xiao river (潇水) via ferry near Lingling, China, during WWII. In the background, on the east bank of the river, is the Huilong Pagoda (零陵回龙塔), which remarkably still survives, and has been restored.

Close up of GIs and Chinese civilians on barge at Lingling
In this close up, American GIs look on as Chinese workers try to fix or untangle something under the ferry, as one American lays prostrate, hand towards the water, holding on to something, or maybe even a swimmer's hand.
